THE REBUILD

The aftermath of Hurricane Irma was not a pretty sight. Triple Jack’s ‘lucky break’ was to be somehow somersaulted out of the water and up on to a concrete bridge that connects Nanny Cay to the outer peninsula. Earlier her storm lines tore through her front beams allowing her to cartwheel across the new marina breaking the mast in 4 places as she went.

Blocking access to the peninsula the sensible option was to finish the job Irma had started and break her up to clear the way. Instead, the call was made to lift her, still upside-down, sideways about 300’ and out of the way. As this was done the starboard sponson sheared completely off but the improbable ‘against all odds’ rebuild had begun. About a year later she was craned the right way up and trundled further along the peninsula where the work could really start in earnest. The starboard sponson was carefully glued back in place. A new coachroof, mast and boom followed with work taking place mostly on Sundays with waves of weekend warriors joining the fray. There were times when Nanny Cay’s general manager, Miles Sutherland Pilch would be left scratching his head asking when the job would be done. Replies were always the same and repeated annually ‘next year’s Spring Regatta’! Nanny Cay have sponsored Triple Jack since 1998 through thick and thin. Full respect to them.
